Gracilaria salicornia Farming and Valorisation in Rodrigues Island

The community-based project intends to create socio-economic wealth and at the same time ensuring environmental sustainability and social inclusion through the sustainable production and valorization of the red macroalgae Gracilaria salicornia at Petite Butte, Rodrigues Island, Republic of Mauritius. Through the technical support and business acumen of Ter-Mer Rodriguez Association, the Seaweed Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd of Petite Butte and its targeted-associated community will be empowered and accompanied to put in place a well-conceived economic sector of Gracilaria salicornia through enhanced production, valorization, marketing and commercialization of Gracilariabased food products. Based on previous supports brought by Ter-Mer Rodriguez Association, we intend to take seaweed farming to another major step towards providing a novel economic activity in Rodrigues Island.
